We've had a number of posts about the Chemical Brothers' career. Now it's time to look back to their early days as the Dust Brothers, in the fist post under the letter D.
Tom & Ed famously met in history class at Manchester University in 1988. They started off as DJ's known as "The 237 Turbo Nutters" (named after the number of their house on Dickenson Road in Manchester and a reference to their Blackburn raving days). They then opted for "The Dust Brothers" which they nicked from the L.A. producers of "Pauls Boutique" (as they thought they would never be famous). In 1995 they changed their name to "The Chemical Brothers" after the real Dust Brothers threatened to sue.
Ton and Ed released their first EP "Song To The Siren" 1992 on Diamond Records (never heard it - anyone?) but were soon snapped up by Junior Boys Own and it was re-released in 1993 with mixes from early champion Andy Weatherall. The Sabre mix on the 12" is much longer than the edited version included on the "JBO:A Perspective 1988-1998" compilation. They also released their "14th Century Sky" and "My Mercury Mouth" EPs as The Dust Brothers before switching to The Chemical Brothers name.
